Ever wonder what your school serves you for lunch? Not just what they serve, but the components that make up your foods? Well in this case, we interviewed a few students at Fallon Middle School for their opinion on our school lunches. The Fallon Middle School lunch staff serve a variety of foods, from nachos all the way to sushi. We asked several students ranging from sixth to eighth grade a few questions relating to school lunches. Here are a few of our interviewees.
We asked Andrew Won, an eighth grader at Fallon, if he thought that the foods the school provides were healthy or unhealthy.
“I believe it’s healthy because they serve a wide variety and that includes
vegetables such as salad.”
Andrew also pushed the fact that we make the choices. He stated as “it is our fault that we pick the unhealthy foods rather than the ones that are beneficial for your health.”
During our interviews, we found that many students think Fallon’s food options healthy, however some students would suggest that they should provide a wider variety of healthier options.
Kwan Cheung, one of Fallon’s cafeteria staff members states, “We make sure
that the foods we serve are whole grain and that the calories are not too high.”
It seems that Fallon’s staff makes the effort to serve healthy food options for their students. They ensure that all grain related products be whole grain and that chips be the healthiest possible (the baked chip selection). Even though they do provide the healthier choices, they also sell several snacks that are not equally as healthy. This gives the choices a variety, so lunch is not bland.
Overall, Fallon strives to become a healthy school, not just by physical education but by their lunch options. They take this seriously and care for your overall health by providing us a wide selection of foods. However, if you choose a carbonated drink instead of water or donuts instead of an orange, it is you who made that choice. So, the next time you choose a cookie for you side snack, just think to yourself, ‘What is my healthier alternative?’
