American or Americanized?
By: Alejandro Jatem
Fallon Middle School is a widely diverse school, as we can see in our day to day, this school is filled with different cultures, which originate from different countries, so we thought that it may be good to go around to a classroom (Mrs. Young 7th) and an AP session to ask the people if they were born in the US or not, to finally have a sense on how diverse the school is, and here are the results:
RESULTS
US born not US born
36 7
TOTAL: 43
So it looks like that even when there are so many different races and cultures, most of them were born in the United States. It’s pretty interesting to see this, because it means that their cultures have been kept through one or more generations. We can just say that Fallon is a culturally diverse school.

School Snack Survey
By: Sriya Sadhu
Many kids have bought lunch at Fallon at least one time or another. Maybe you’ve grabbed some snacks at lunch. Fallon has a huge variety of snacks, and each person has a variety of taste preferences. 88 students were asked last week what snack they preferred the most out of what is available. Here is a survey of Fallon’s students favorite lunch snack.
Chips: 36
Juice: 3
Cookies: 21
Doughnuts: 11
Rice Krispie Treats: 7
Pop Tarts: 10
Fruit: 0
As you can see, many people are inclined to buy chips or cookies at the lunch line. Kids tend to buy more of the foods that have a sugarier/saltier taste rather than the healthier alternatives, such as juice or fruit. Another reason why certain snacks are more popular than others is the price. Even though doughnuts at Fallon have a good taste with powdered or chocolate coats, they cost much more than a cookie. These two factors can determine whether a snack is popular or not. Overall, snacks sold at school are essential to people who don’t have time to make their own lunch, so remember to eat healthy, and keep snacking!
Color Guard: A sport?
By Ethan Lee, Brandon Barron, Astrid Escobar
Many people have a different definition of what dictates a sport. The most obvious;
physically demanding sports such as football, basketball, baseball, etc. However, the line of what people determine a sport is somewhat blurred when talking about activities such as color guard. FMS Press took a survey of some of the students at Fallon Middle School about what they thought about these debated hobbies/sports.
A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or
team competes against another or others for entertainment.

A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or
team competes against another or others for entertainment.
Question: Is Color guard a sport?
Yes: 68
No: 102
Arguments
Color guard provides an excellent amount of physical exercise and skill. In Color guard it takes time and effort to learn tricks, such as basic drop spins to throwing triple tosses. Color guard includes many techniques and requires athleticism. It also includes a team that competes against others for entertainment. Such as CCGC sponsors a competing tournament for Color guard teams such as Fallon.
Color guard is not a sport because it is a hobby and an art. By definition a sport consists of and athleticism and strength. Most sports are contact sports and you can get really injured playing these contact sports, although in color guard you can't really get as hurt as you do in physical sports. In color guard, the most serious injury is when you get hit in the head with the flag that was thrown in the air or by throwing a rifle in the air with the same result.
With that said, the students of Fallon Middle School, as a majority, do not think that color guard is a sport. Although, the argument can still be made that color guard is in fact a sport, and not a hobby or art.

Video Games: What Type Do You Play?
By: Alejandro Jatem and Gabe Mirigian
So, it’s common knowledge that a vast amount of students like video games, and that there are some Fallon students that don’t like them at all, but what kind of video games do the people who play, like? There are so many game genres that it’s really hard to cover them all, as the genres range from first person shooters, action, sandbox, sports, arcade, mobile, adventure, action-adventure, RPG, party games, fighting games, and so on. So we decided to grab the most popular types of video games and ask two different classes, Mrs. Young 7th period (7th grade) and Ms. Tomilloso 7th period (6th grade), which video game they liked the most.
Survey Question: What type of video games do you like to play?
First person shooters (COD): 7
Sports games (FIFA): 10
Arcade type games (PACMAN): 1
Mobile games (Clash of clans): 4
Sandbox (Minecraft, GTA): 10
I don’t like video games: 6
Total students: 38
It appears that two genres stood above, sports and sandbox games. It looks like students like to play as their favorite team/sport or to just go around in a big map and do whatever the game can allow them do. It’s clear that many people like to play video games. So the question is, what games do you like to play?

Social Media Survey
By: Amelie Chabot and Alexis Nieto
Lately, students cannot get their eyes off their phones even when their parents ask them. The cause of this? Well, it’s simply because of social media. We did a survey on 7th graders’ favorite social media. Their favorite social media seems to be Instagram with a roaring 46 out of 125 students.
We asked a 7th grader, Carter Windom, why his favorite social media was Instagram and he responded, “I like it because I can take pictures and talk to my friends.”
As for Snapchat, Marissa Shiu, another student at Fallon responded, “I like Snapchat because you can screenshot your friends embarrassing photos.”
While most students aren’t allowed to have social media, they either have another sight they like to use, or nothing at all. Instagram was one of our popular categories but the “other” category was right behind it. With most students playing video games on their computers, we have 42 students with either no social media or other sites they like to browse on.

Apple or Android?
By: Yazeed Samaenah
“If today were the last day of my life I would want to do what I'm about to do today.”
-Steve Jobs
Phone of the generation? We are here to speak about your favorite brand of phone. There are two prominent brands of phones: Apple and Android. There is quite a debate over which brand is better, therefore we decided to conduct this survey. Here are the results.
Survey Question: Do you prefer Apple or Android (technology-wise)?
Apple: 60
Android: 24
Neither: 2
Total: 86
As you can see, Apple has taken over the phone business as most people prefer Apple although there are a few people who likes Android such as James Fu. He comments, “I like Android for multiple reasons. It has longer battery, better camera, better screen resolution, and shortcuts.”
Talia Southon added her thoughts about Apple, “I like Apple since it is easy to handle, and it also has different varieties of apps.”
All in all, the most liked phone is Apple. Although feelings may change throughout the years but for now, Apple is ahead of the business at Fallon Middle School.

Sports Survey
By: Brandon Barron, Yazeed Samaenah
Everyone in the world is always arguing about which sport is better, some people say football, other people say soccer. Upon hearing that, we conducted a survey with some seventh graders at Fallon to see what sports they like.
Data:
Basketball 16
Soccer 14
Football 15
Baseball 4
Volleyball 4
Other 29
As we conducted the survey, we saw a major variety in the sport’s selection. It seemed that sports that weren’t listed, were the favorable option. These sports may include tennis, cricket, swimming, and dance, plus many more. Even with the diversity among the sports, all are fun to participate in.

Cell Phone Usage Policy Survey
By: Abby Chiang and Astrid Escobar
Ring, Ring! Hello? Should phones be used during school hours? At the moment, phone usage is banned. To some, this is outrageously upsetting. Some people defend that using their phones or at least having the right to keep them on could be a safety precaution, and that not having them on them is a danger issue.
For example, in a time of an earthquake, students will need a phone to call for their parents. In emergencies like this, the cell phone policy should be pushed away. Another instance would be if fire occured students may not be able to call for their parents. This policy acts like a roadblock to students who want quick access to handheld technology.
In conclusion, the students of Fallon have shared their opinions on the cell phone policy. The majority would prefer to use cell phones and enjoy having the luxury of using their phones as calculators, looking up things for research, and sometimes taking photos of notes and their homework displayed on the board for a quicker and more efficient way of documenting their homework. TTYL!
