Did you know that there is a new building this year? It’s the P-building, otherwise known as the portables here at Fallon Middle School. This area was built over the summer to accommodate the growth of our increasing student population as said by Ms. Sweeney, the principal. We have an increase of around 160 students more this year than last year, so we needed more classes to fit the students and teachers comfortably and effectively. The DUSD Facilities Department supervised the construction of the new portables and also moved the old lockers and widened the sidewalks.
In the new building, the 7th grade core teachers have their classes here. Ms. Andrews, Ms. Motter, Ms. Nice, Mr. Dadzie, Mr. Voeller, Mrs. Lewis, and Ms. Healy are the seven teachers who work there, although Mr. Voeller is stepping in for Ms. Harris. The portables also differ from regular classrooms because they are new and have bulletin board walls. The format of the portables is also a little different. The P-building is located behind the C-building.
From a student’s point of view, it was said that the portables are easier to find than regular classrooms because they take up a whole section. During an interview, Shriya Pusuluri, a student in Ms. Nice’s class, said that she preferred the regular classrooms over the portables because of an ant problem in her classroom, P-4. She stated,”I think they disrupted an anthill or something, because they’re all over the room.” This may not affect all portables, but it seems that the issue was not a one-time problem.
Although there are many ants running around, the portables also give off a cozy feel, as said by Ms. Andrews, a teacher in P-2. This teacher likes the portables better than the other classrooms for several reasons, one being that she can work next to her colleagues, the other seventh grade core teachers. She also liked that they are less confined, there are bulletin walls, and that she can walk naturally out of her class whereas in the other classrooms, you have to walk out of a cut-in. Ms.Andrews could also see her old students since the portables are very close to the eighth grade classrooms. Some inconveniences though, there are also ants in her classroom and no sink.
When the classes in the portables were ready, the teachers had a dramatic change when moving out of their old classrooms. Ms.Andrews moved from D-4 to P-2, and revealed that moving classrooms was a difficult chore of packing, district moving, and unpacking. The positive part was that she got to clean out stuff she didn’t need. She is still trying to get used to the placement and flow of materials as well as the classroom, but her experience has been good so far.
In conclusion, it seems that the teachers would like the new building more than the students so far, but overall, the portables are a fantastic new addition to the campus of Fallon Middle School.
