October is a month the majority of Americans find significant because of Halloween. However, an abundant amount of people worldwide celebrate October to raise awareness for something more important than candy: breast cancer.
Founded in 1985, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) is an annual event throughout the month of October supporting breast cancer patients. People internationally attend parades, marathons, and charity events to raise money for research, treatments, prevention, diagnosis, and cure. The campaign provides support and love to breast cancer patients.
A local Fallon student speaks out about her feelings of breast cancer. “No one deserves breast cancer. I think it’s tragic and so sad whenever someone has it.” Yzabelle Santulan, 8th grader, says. “My aunt had it, and may she rest in peace.”
People have found another way to support NBCAM in a more widespread way. When people wear a pink ribbon, it normally means they’re supporting NBCAM. This symbolic support is efficient and easily seen when glancing at someone. The pink ribbon became the breast cancer awareness color because the color pink is considered feminine in modern Western countries. The color pink evokes the role of caring for other people, being gorgeous, empathetic, loving, and cooperative. Therefore, when wearing a pink ribbon it resembles having all of those lovely traits.
So, got any pink shirts? Any socks that are fuchsia? Well, it’s the perfect month to show off your love for pink and your support towards NBCAM, so go ahead and broadcast your pink clothing while October 2015 is still active!
