Did you know that the students of the 6th Period Competitive Debate class recently participated in a Debate Tournament? With two months of preparation, Fallon’s team definitely made an impression on February’s debate. We interviewed none other than Fallon’s debate coach, Mrs. Lewis, and asked her how it went.
What were the topics that were being debated on?
“So we had a topic about women in combat and whether or not they should be allowed to do all combat rules and if allowing them in combat will weaken the military. We also had a topic on if Citizens United will do more good than harm which is about elections. And then we had a topic about teacher assigned homework does more harm than good, and then our last one was the use of crispr should be banned.”
About how many kids were participating in the tournament?
“We’re looking at over 150 kids total.”
Which schools were participating at the debate?
“Most of them are not in Dublin. We’re looking at schools from San Ramon, Oakland, and 3 other teams participated in the debate as well.”
Who do you think won the debate and why?
“Mehika Sharma got 2nd place, and another student Morgan Minkler got 14th place.”
How long has Fallon’s team been preparing for the debate?
“We’ve been preparing since December and soon to be almost one month to prepare. This was our first time doing this and there were some other teachers coaching for about 11-12 years I think. None the less, it had been fun preparing for an event as big as this one.”
What were some of the main highlights/memorable moments in the tournament?
“A memorable moment was during the break when the Fallon students started performing the One Tribe dance and even the students from the other schools joined in. It pleased me that the atmosphere wasn’t as competitive as it could’ve been.”
What do you think could have been improved during the debate?
“There is always room for improvement, especially because we are new to the debate league. We’re going to focus more on responding to heckles and thinking on the spot.”
Overall, did you think the debate went smoothly? Why or why not?
“It went really well, the leadership team helped us run it. Mrs. Young and Mrs. Sweeney helped, and most of all the students kept their energy and kept going without getting tired.”
Based on the answers that Mrs. Lewis gave us, it is fair to assume that overall, the debate went very smoothly. As she stated that there are multiple debate tournaments like this per year, and we’ll hope that we will get to do as good as we did this year.
