On Tuesday April 18th, Kiya Washington and I interviewed Mr. Levin, who is a counselor here at Fallon. We asked him questions about the Safe Haven Club and what it’s about.
How do you contribute to the Safe Haven Club ?
- Well I’m new to the Safe Haven Club. Mr. Course is the official advisor. Mrs. Scharbach has been helping out. I just recently stepped in. I'm co advisor. The role of the Advisor is guiding students to what objects they’ve set for themselves.
What made you want to advise the Safe Haven Club ?
- I don't advise any other clubs. I help with CJSF since fallon has grown i've stepped back.
Do you feel like the school and the community supports the club ?
- Were all on our journey I think we're all trying to figure out who we are. I don't think that ends at any certain age. I think all people should be asking themselves these questions no matter how old they get.
What do you talk about and why ?
- I've found Mrs. Sweeny to be very supportive, when we decided very last minute to participate in the day of silence. The teachers were very supportive, they taught all day in silence to show their support. For our LGBT and questions students. And allies for those students that may identify as straight but allies and want to help support stop bullying and harassment of LGBT students
How many people participated in the Day of Silence ?
- Day of Silence is something that's been going on for over 10 years. Its observed by hundreds of schools across America. It is done on the third friday of April. With this being the first year of Safe Haven, we figured it would be an easy activity to participate in to raise awareness at fallon.
Do you feel since you are a counselor here at Fallon the students feel more safer talking to you?
- I think it depends on the student. Because students see their teachers 5 days a week. They usually already have a relationship with their teachers it's easier for them to talk to them. Because teachers have to teach and are busy with the things they have to do, it's not always possible for teachers to help students as much as they like. Mrs. Lidster and myself, it's our full time job to help students. We don't have to grade papers so we can devote our time to helping students.
