Have you ever heard of CJSF? They are the California Junior Scholarship Federation, or CJSF. This organization, run by Mrs. Sharbach, is there to help the community and world through involvement and fundraising. It was started in 1967 by Charles F. Seymour. Their motto is also “Scholarship for Service!” As told by Mrs.Sharbach, CJSF started at Fallon in 2009 by Ms. Zummo, who was actually a member of this association in her old high school. Having enjoyed the experience so much, Ms.Zummo decided to bring this organization to Fallon. Mrs. Sharbach just took over as faculty advisor three years ago.
You might be wondering,”What do they do at Fallon?’ CJSF at Fallon provide tutoring after school on Mondays and Tuesdays in the library for any students that need help with homework or any subject. They also participated in the Dublin Creek Cleanup, an event to help clean Tassajara Creek and provide tutoring for surrounding elementary schools, like Kolb for example. Currently, this association is collecting unwanted Halloween candy to raise money for the Stanford Children’s Hospital! This club is only for a good cause and even do community service. They have been going on for six years at Fallon.
Right now, there are 125 members, but it will increase when this operation is open to seventh graders in the second semester. They usually end up with about 250 members by the end of the year.
The mission of this group is to be part of a team that will impact the world and help others. They just want to make small steps to make the world a better place for all of us. This student led club plan and organize fundraisers and community service events like the clean up of the creek and raising money for the Marine Mammal Center. Events that are coming up or already done are in November. For example, this group visited a veterans hospital in San Francisco on November 14th and are going to Glide Memorial, also in the same city, to feed the homeless on the 28th. The board and project members are always trying to better the world. They even have their own website under their section of the student clubs section on the District Fallon website!
This club is primarily for eighth graders at Fallon, and they can join at the beginning of the year. Although, seventh graders also have a chance to join in the second semester. You also need to have a 3.5 GPA or above to participate. The board meets with Mrs. Sharbach every week, while project managers meet every two weeks. Overall, all members meet once a month for updates. If you do join this group, you will be making the community a great place for all, step by step.
You might wonder how CJSF plans and organizes their events. First the board members create a proposal that usually gets approved. The other students then help coordinate the event. An event last year was a variety show event that raised $1100 for Tri-Valley Haven, an organization helping victims of domestic violence. They also hope to have as much success this year.
In conclusion, CJSF is an organization where you can make a positive impact on the world and your community, ran by Mrs. Sharbach. Don’t miss out on the amazing things CJSF does!
